W1MWV -- Jul 16, 2008 07:50 ET
This year the White Mountain Amateur Radio Club, W1MWV, returned to the Mud
Bowl Stadium in North Conway, NH. We setup with three transmitters and a GOTA
station. Up on the ridge was the 80/20 SSB station and the 40/15 SSB station as
well as GOTA. Down on the field was the CW station. This separated the antennas
pretty well to reduce the usual inter-station interference.
Three antennas were wire, 160m Windom for CW, inverted vee for 80/20 SSB and
a dipole for 40/15 SSB. The GOTA station used an R5 vertical. Using slingshot
and fishing line the antennas were hung without too much difficulty. The tennis
ball slingshot worked pretty well.
Screen houses and canopies provided the shelter and, with a little help,
weathered the Sunday morning downpour that kept us off the air for about an
hour. Tables and chairs were provided by the park.
We managed to keep the three stations manned with operators almost the entire
24 hours we operated and that really helped the score. By Sunday afternoon, the
overnight operators were really tired.
Food was outstanding with Luke KB1IIR doing the chef duties.
Everyone had a great time and we're looking forward to next year.
